## Emplacement

The ocean, omnipresent, stands out as the symbol of the city, sweeping the nostrils of visitors with its mist. Old stones also have a say in this landscape bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, where low coastlines, steep cliffs and sandy coastlines alternate. Not far from the shore, the islands of Ré, Oleron and Aix form a natural barrier preventing the waves of the ocean from disturbing the calm of the millennial city. Originally a fishing village founded in the 10th century, it took only two millennia to become an important port. Its dominance in maritime trade lasted until the 15th century. But her rebellious spirit was not to the King's liking and she succumbed to the siege of Richelieu in the sixteenth century.
